Our
Practice History:
Coast Contact Lens Co. was founded in 1971 by Stephen Downs OD at our
present location in Huntington Beach. Dr. Downs partnered with Dr.
Ewell to
form the Hydracon Corporation, where many early soft lens developments were
pioneered. Dr. Ewell worked in the late 60's with Otto Wichterle,
a
biochemist from Czechoslovakia who is considered the "Father" of
the soft contact lens industry. Dr. Wichterle is famous for discovering
HEMA, the material we continue to use today to make soft contact lenses.
In
1979, Dr. Downs pioneered with Dr. Ewell a unique soft lens design for
correcting astigmatism known as the toric soft lens. In 1982, Dr. Blaze
joined Dr. Downs, focusing his work on FDA clinical studies for approval
of
the Hydracon soft toric lens. The lens was approved in 1983 and today
is
still considered one of the premier toric designs in the industry. In
1987,
Dr. Downs sold his clinical practice to Dr. Blaze, allowing him to focus
on
his expanding contact lens manufacturing business with over 200 employees
and a growing base of doctors who specialized in contact lens fitting.
A few
years later Dr. Downs sold his well known manufacturing business to
CooperVision.
Under Dr. Blaze's ownership the business has focused on problem solving
eye care. He utilizes the 3900
square foot facility to include a clinic and manufacturing labs for spectacle
lenses and
rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The practice has continued focusing
on
specialty contact lens fitting, but has expanded by providing therapeutic
eye disease treatment and diagnosis, pediatric eyecare, management of laser
vision surgery patients and an optical dispensary with over 600 frames .
